Since releasing their 3rd full length, 2008’s Scars & Souvenirs, Vancouver, BC’s Theory of a Deadman have been having their share of moments in the sun. Their single “Bad Girlfriend” hit #1 on the rock charts, the album was certified Gold, the band was invited to play the Grey Cup, Crue Fest 2, and are currently on a North American headlining run about to make a special stop at The Olympics.
In hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada is marrying music and sports in offering some of the best artists hailing from each territory of their country to rock their respective stadiums during the Olympic Medal Ceremonies each night. On Friday, February 19th, Theory of a Deadman will be joining the ranks of Sarah MacLachlan, Rush, Nelly Furtado, Barenaked Ladies and many other artists given the honor of performing in “The Victory Concert Series.” While Medals are being awarded for the Women’s Snowboarding Half-Pipe competition, the band will be playing a full set which can be streamed right here.
Says frontman/ underrated comedian Tyler Connolly of the band’s inclusion in the event, “It feels pretty good. The four of us in the band had to compete in races to actually get into it.” The jokester continues, “I won, I did the triathlon, where you cross-country ski with a gun on your back, then shoot at a picture of a bulls-eye. I hit a bulls-eye.”
More seriously, Connolly explains, “It’s going to be pretty awesome. It’s in our hometown, Vancouver, [but] it’s in the middle of a tour, so unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to see anything other than play the show, because we have to leave that night. But it will be great, a lot of friends and family will be there, and we get to play in BC Place, which we’ve never played in before -- it’s a huge stadium.”
Further putting it into context, Connolly details, “It’s massive; it’s like a football stadium. It’s going to be loud -- there’s going to be 50 or 60,000 people there.” When asked if that’s the largest crowd the band has ever performed in front of, Connolly replies, “We did the Grey Cup last year, which was in Montreal, and that’s like the Super Bowl of Canada -- I think it was 65,000. That was our biggest crowd that we’ve performed in front of so far. But this will be great.”
Whether via TV or computer screen, fans around the world can tune in to NBC or NBConline to catch Theory’s performance in it’s entirety.

Theory of a Deadman vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Tyler Connolly recently stopped by Roadrunner HQ to talk about his newly launched advice column, Tell Tyler. While fans can relate to Connolly's "Bad Girlfriend" and understand that sometimes it's "Not Meant to Be," we checked in with the pompadoured frontman to find out just what his qualifications are in doling out advice.
Connolly explains, "I guess because I write relationship songs that maybe I can mend people’s problems. But no, I don’t have any special things on my wall saying I can help people deal with their issues, other than the fact that I’ve probably gone through a lot of them myself."
A jokester at heart, Connolly addresses the somewhat seriousness of his task, saying, "A lot of times I kind of goof around, but I’ll tell people honestly what I think, and whether or not it will help somebody, I guess we’ll have to find out."
"I’ve always connected to the lyrics and always felt that Theory of a Deadman is a lyric-driven band," continues Connolly. "That’s where we get a lot of our fanbase from -- relating to the issues in the songs, so it’s cool that I could do this Tell Tyler thing; it goes a little bit beyond just playing for people."
As for his own personal experiences, Connolly muses, "A lot of [the questions submitted] have to do with a similar problems in the songs, ironically. Some people will say, “I have this bad girlfriend, it’s like this,” and I’m like, “Yeah, I can understand…”
Ask Tyler your questions, get some answers, or just read what the very funny frontman has to say right here.
